Know Your Customer

Know Your Customer

14th November 2019MMPurse

This is a mini intro into the first of the key marketing courses inside The Unconventional Business Hub, which we launched last week. My Customer & Market Development course is a deep dive into identifying your core customer and therefore your market opportunity. It should be the very basis of any marketing activity that you undertake for your business.

How would you describe your perfect customer? What prospective customers are the most likely to buy your product or service immediately? What are the most important qualities that your ideal customer would have?

When you know your customers, you know your market. A market is a number of your ‘ideal customers’ who need, want, love, and can and will buy what you offer in enough quantities for you to build a profitable and sustainable business.

Take out a pen and paper and go through the steps below.

  • Define your product(s)
  • Define your ideal customer(s)
  • Determine the benefits that your customer is looking for
  • Determine where your customer is located
  • Determine when your customers buy
  • Find your tribe - bringing steps above together to identify where groups of customers with similar profiles can be found together (hint: this is how you start figuring out where to direct your marketing and promotional activities).

You may have different customers for different products or services. Or sometimes the same product but marketed differently to different customers. That’s why you need to find out who your customers are, what they ‘look’ like, where they hang out, what makes them tick and most importantly… when, why and how they will buy from you.

Even if you are many years into your business, ensuring you remain focused on your customers is a really worthwhile exercise. Or perhaps your customer has changed since you first starting out and you need to realign your messaging to match this new audience.

By putting your customer at the heart of your business you will always have a clear path to follow.
